(AP) ? A severe and snowy cold snap across central and eastern Europe has left at least 36 people dead, cut off power to towns, and snarled traffic. Officials are responding with measures ranging from opening shelters to dispensing hot tea, with particular concern for the homeless and elderly.

This part of Europe is not unused to cold, but the current freeze, which spread to most of the region last week, came after a period of relatively mild weather. Many were shocked when temperatures in some parts plunged Monday to minus 20 Celsius (minus 4 Fahrenheit).

"Just as we thought we could get away with a spring-like winter ..." lamented Jelena Savic, 43, from the Serbian capital of Belgrade, her head wrapped in a shawl with only eyes uncovered. "I'm freezing. It's hard to get used to it so suddenly."

Officials have appealed to people to stay indoors and be careful. Police searched for the homeless to make sure they didn't freeze to death. In some places, heaters will be set up at bus stations.

Still, 18 people, most of them homeless, died in Ukraine from hypothermia and nearly 500 people sought medical help for frostbite and hypothermia in just three days last week, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

Temperatures in parts of Ukraine fell to minus 16 C (3 F) during the day and minus 23 C (minus 10 F) in the night. Authorities opened 1,500 shelters to provide food and heat and closed schools and nurseries. More than 17,000 people have sought help in such shelters in the past three days, authorities said.

In Poland, at least 10 people froze to death as the cold reached minus 26 C (minus 15 F) on Monday.

Malgorzata Wozniak, a spokeswoman for Poland's Interior Ministry, told The Associated Press that elderly people and the homeless were among the dead. Police were checking unheated empty buildings for homeless people they could take to shelters.

Warsaw city authorities decided to place more than 40 heaters in the busiest city transport stops to help waiting passengers keep warm.

City authorities in the Czech capital of Prague set up tents for an estimated 3,000 homeless people. Freezing temperatures also damaged train tracks, slowing railway traffic.

In central Serbia, three people died and two more were missing, while 14 municipalities were operating under emergency decrees. Efforts to clear roads blocked by snow were hampered by strong winds and dozens of towns faced power outages.

Police said one woman froze to death in a snowstorm in a central Serbian village, while two elderly men were found dead, one in the snow outside his home. Further south, emergency crews are searching for two men in their 70s who are feared dead.

In Bulgaria, a 57-year-old man froze to death in a northwestern village and emergency decrees were declared in 25 of the country's 28 districts. In the capital of Sofia, authorities handed out hot tea and placed homeless people in emergency shelters.

Strong winds also closed down Bulgaria's main Black Sea port of Varna, while part of a major highway leading to Bulgaria and Greece from Turkey was closed after a heavy snowfall. Nearly 200 Turkish Airlines flights to and from Istanbul's Ataturk Airport were canceled, and a city sports hall was turned to a temporary shelter for some 350 homeless people.

The temperature in Turkey's province of Kars, which borders Armenia, dropped to minus 25 C on Sunday night.

The situation was similar in Romania, where reports said four people have died because of freezing weather. There, authorities sent prison inmates to shovel snow and unblock paths leading to a shelter with some 300 stray dogs and puppies.

Weather forecasts say the cold snap will continue.

"We are getting some 'real' winter this week," Croatian meteorologist Zoran Vakula said.

Macedonia Muslims urge restraint over carnival (AP)

SKOPJE, Macedonia ? Muslim leaders in Macedonia appealed for calm on Monday among community members outraged over a carnival in which Orthodox Christian men mocked Muslims by dressing as Burqa-clad women.

The incident at the Jan. 13 Vevcani festival has prompted angry, sometimes violent demonstrations by Muslims, who make up 33 percent of the country's 2.1 million population and accuse the majority of stoking hatred against them.

On Saturday, some protesters attacked buses and defaced a Macedonian flag and replaced it with a green flag to represent Islam. On the same day, a church was attacked by unknown perpetrators in the nearby village of Labunista.

In a statement Monday, Macedonian Muslim leaders called for restraint but also accused the government of promoting Islamophobia.

"The behavior of Muslims should be restrained, but, unfortunately, we are concerned that Islamophobia in Macedonia is often combined with government propaganda," they said. "Such is the case with this carnival that the government annually subsidizes with...the money of all citizens, including Muslims."

The carnival, said to have been held for some 1,400 years, attracts thousands of visitors. Local resident traditionally wear elaborate, frequently sarcastic masks, with some of the most common costumes including devils and demons.

Muslims in Macedonia are almost all ethnic Albanians. Albanians, in Macedonia and elsewhere, have traditionally been secular, but conservative Islamic schools, especially Wahhabism, have taken a foothold in the years following a brief ethnic Albanian uprising in Macedonia in 2001. This spread has been mainly financed from Saudi Arabia.

SJSU computer science club networks with LAN gaming party event ...

by Christian Gin Jan 29, 2012 5:01 pm Tags: club, Computer Science, LAN, MacQuarrie Hall, Party, San Jose State, SJSU

Whether it?s coding a new program, or playing games, the SJSU computer science club is open for all SJSU students to mingle with others.

Located in the left corner of the second floor of MacQuarrie Hall, the computer science club meets every weekday to do both school work and play video games.

?The CS club is open all the time, for students to relax and brush up on studies,? said Aaron Brown, a junior and creative writing major.

The computer science club hosted its first Local Area Network (LAN) party of the semester on Friday night for club members and guests,?filling the club room?with?PC gamers on laptop computers.

A LAN party is a gathering of people who bring their computers to play games with each other. ?A guest is required to bring his or her own computer and hook it up to the network hub. ?The network hub connects all the computers together so participants can all play the same game together.

Titles played include League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Starcraft and several?console games that were emulated for the computer.

Club president David Do, a senior computer science major, and club vice president Yu-Ching Wang, a senior computer science major, said the computer science club?s goal is to help others take a further step into computer science.

?We want to expose our members to opportunities that are inherent in the computer science field,? Do said.

To help students, Do said they have ?tech talk events? where?representatives from tech?companies?to give insight about what their firms do.

Companies such as Microsoft Corportation, IBM, Avanade Inc., Tata Consultancy Services Limited, Zynga and NetApp Inc. have visited in past semesters.

According to Wang, these tech talks?are invaluable to those who are graduating with a degree in?any computer major.

?The tech talks from the companies prepare the students for the future,? Wang said. ?It introduces a sample of what the real world is?like.?

On occasion, there will even be a job or internship opportunity available when the representative visits.

Do and Wang want computer science students to stay connected and to help one another when programming can become tough.

?Our goal is to help students take the next level in their programming careers,? Wang said.

San Jose State alumni?also give tech talks?about their experiences with computer science.

Wang said that the second goal of the CS club is to assist students in academic studies and build more resources for them.

To do this, ?Wang said club tutors are available to help students with coding assignments and math puzzles.

According to Do, computer science majors primarily program in the Java language because it is one of the essential basics.

?Java is the basic language that every computer science major must know,? Do said.

The Java language was developed in the early ?90s at Sun Microsystems, previously headquartered in Santa Clara before it merged with Redwood City?s Oracle Corporation. ?The language involves code that is made to be compiled in a platform like NetBeans or BlueJ to work on just about every virtual platform.

According to Do, programming?requires logic and critical thinking skills to create?complex code.

Wang said that some of the programmers will also learn how to code in?C++, the language that Java is derived from.

Do said that the CS club is also known for its ?quiet days,? where?the club room will be near silent, and used to only study or talk about the languages they?re programming in, and its??top coder contests,? for those who are good at?solving problems with code.

Previous CS club contests include ?codes with holes,? ?algorithms,? and ?problem sets.?

Aaron Brown said in addition to helping students who are computer science majors, the club?is a great place to debrief.

?The computer science club is a place for relaxing and playing games,? Brown said while playing Starcraft at Friday?s LAN party. ?It?s a convenient time for me to chill with my side hobby of playing games.?

The club room is in MacQuarrie Hall 227 and is open for anyone to visit for help or for leisure on computers.

Obama to senators: Change the way you do business

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is pressing his case for changes in how the Senate does business, hoping to ease the partisan gridlock, and he wants to bar lawmakers from profiting from their service.

In his radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama said many people he met during his five-state tour after his State of the Union address were optimistic but remained unsure "that the right thing will get done in Washington this year, or next year, or the year after that."

"And frankly, when you look at some of the things that go on in this town, who could blame them for being a little cynical?" Obama said.

The president reiterated his calls for government reform made in Tuesday's address, saying he wants the Senate to pass a rule that requires a yes-or-no vote for judicial and public service nominations after 90 days. Many of the nominees, he said, carry bipartisan support but get held up in Congress for political reasons.

Obama noted that "a senator from Utah" said he would hold up nominations because he opposed the recess appointment of the head of the new consumer protection agency and three members of the National Labor Relations Board. Obama put the officials in their post during the Senate's holiday break; many Republicans have called that move unconstitutional. Obama said the American people deserve "better than gridlock and games."

"One senator gumming up the works for the whole country is certainly not what our founding fathers envisioned," the president said.

Obama was referring to Utah GOP. Sen Mike Lee who asserted on Thursday that Obama's "blatant and egregious disregard both for proper constitutional procedures and the Senate's unquestioned role in such appointments, I find myself duty-bound to resist the consideration and approval of additional nominations until the president takes steps to remedy the situation."

On Saturday, Lee issued a statement standing by his decision.

"Sadly, the president has sought to make this a partisan issue; but the Constitution is not partisan," he said. "The Constitution does not allow any president, Republican or Democrat, to circumvent the Senate in making appointments, and I will resist, just as vigorously, members of my own party who would attempt to do the same thing."

In his address, Obama said he also wants Congress to pass legislation to ban insider trading by lawmakers and prohibit lawmakers from owning securities in companies that have business before their committees.

In addition, the president is seeking to prohibit people who "bundle" campaign contributions from other donors for members of Congress from lobbying Congress. Obama urged the public to contact their member of Congress and tell them "that it's time to end the gridlock and start tackling the issues that really matter."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., delivering the GOP address, said Obama's address to Congress lacked much discussion of the president's achievements "because there isn't much."

"This president didn't talk about his record for one simple reason," Rubio said. "He doesn't want you to know about it. But you do know about it, because you feel the failure of his leadership every single day of your life."

Rubio accused the president of driving up the national debt, failing to reduce high unemployment across the country and offering divisive economic policies.

The Florida senator said there is a growing gap between the rich and the poor but the best way to solve the problem is by embracing the American free enterprise system. Rubio said he hopes 2012 "will be the beginning of our work toward a new and prosperous American century."

PEN writers condemn attacks on Mexico journalists (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Several Nobel prize laureates are joining the PEN International writers group in condemning attacks on journalists in Mexico.

Mario Vargas Llosa and Toni Morrison are among those participating in a full-page ad in the newspaper El Universal, signed by 170 of the world's most acclaimed writers. It recognizes the courage of journalists in a country were attacks have increased dramatically with drug violence in recent years.

Friday's ad says attacks on journalists "impede the ability to live a secure life free of censorship."

Attacks on Mexican journalists generally go unprosecuted.

Mexico's national human rights commission says 74 journalists were killed from 2000 to 2011. The Committee to Protect Journalists says 51 were slain in that time.

Accused California hair salon shooter to stand trial in October (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? A former tugboat worker will stand trial in October on charges of killing his ex-wife and seven others at a California hair salon in the largest mass slaying in Orange County history, a judge ruled on Friday.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Thomas Goethals scheduled the trial of Scott Evans Dekraai, 42, to begin on October 15, almost exactly a year after the October 12, 2011, shooting rampage.

Prosecutors, however, expressed doubt that the trial would begin on time.

Prosecutors said Dekraai, who has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of murder, was locked in a bitter child custody battle with his ex-wife Michelle Fournier when he walked into Salon Meritage in Seal Beach carrying three guns and opened fire.

Fournier, 48, was killed, along with salon owner Randy Fannin, 62, and five other people inside the salon. Prosecutors said Dekraai shot his victims at close range, several of them multiple times as they lay dying.

Harriet Stretz, 73, who was in a chair having her hair styled by her daughter, Laura Lee Elody, at the time of the shooting, survived her wounds. Elody, 46, was among the dead.

After leaving the salon, Dekraai shot dead 64-year-old David Caouette, who was sitting in his sport utility vehicle parked outside the salon, prosecutors said.

Dekraai was arrested just blocks from the bloody scene in Seal Beach, a bucolic beachside community about 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles that had experienced only four homicides in the past decade.

(AP) ? Rafael Nadal outlasted Roger Federer 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in an Australian Open semifinal on Thursday night, the longtime rivals playing with the intensity normally displayed when meeting in a Grand Slam final.

The stars who met in eight Grand Slam finals were on the same side of the draw for the first time at a major since 2005.

Two weeks ago, Nadal injured his right knee and wasn't sure he'd be able to start the tournament. Now, he can barely believe he's in the final.

"If you tell me that two Sundays ago, I really cannot imagine," Nadal said. "For me, it's a dream to be back in a final of the Australian Open."

Nadal will have the opportunity to win another championship on Sunday night when the Spanish left-hander plays the winner of the semifinal Friday between defending champion Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

Earlier Thursday, Maria Sharapova overcame Petra Kvitova to advance to the women's final against Victoria Azarenka. Sharapova broke Kvitova's serve in the last game to finish off a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory and the third-seeded Azarenka beat defending champion Kim Clijsters 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to set up a Saturday night final at Rod Laver Arena that will decide the No. 1 ranking.

Nadal, who holds a 6-2 edge in Grand Slam finals against Federer, made the key service break in the ninth game of the fourth set, making an incredible cross-court forehand winner from well behind the baseline, then watching as Federer hit a backhand wide to give Nadal a 5-4 lead.

Serving for the match, Nadal moved two points away from the win when Federer sent a backhand long. He won on his second match point when Federer floated a forehand long.

At the end, Nadal smashed a ball up high in the stadium, almost clearing the roof. He then applauded along with the crowd when Federer walked off.

The 25-year-old Spaniard won the 2009 Australian title but lost in the quarterfinals in his next two trips to Melbourne Park. Federer hasn't added to his record 16 Grand Slam titles since he won the 2010 Australian Open.

"I thought Rafa played well from start to finish," Federer said. "It was a tough match physically as well. I'm disappointed, but it's only the beginning of the season. I'm feeling all right, so it's OK."

When the often enthralling play was suspended for 10 minutes late in the second set for an Australian Day fireworks display, Federer seemed to be affected most. Nadal led 5-2 at the time, and Federer lost his serve in the next game to give the Spaniard the set. In all, the Swiss dropped 11 points in a row.

"It's tough, it's not helpful, that's for sure," Federer said of the break for the fireworks. "They told us before, so it was no surprise. But I knew it was a lot of points in a row that I lost."

The capacity, 15,000-strong crowd was evenly split in its support, with the names seeming to blur after the R in rival chants.

Each time somebody called out for Rafa, it was met by a response for Roger. The cheers were just as loud for Nadal's scrambling, sometimes astonishing, passing shots as for Federer's deft winners.

With the players on serve in the second set, Nadal went so far wide on a Federer return that he was near the side wall of the arena. Incredibly, he stretched wide and returned the ball crosscourt for a winner. That set up three break points and Nadal clinched the game to take a 4-2 lead in the second set.

Federer saved a set point in the 11th game of the third set that eventually forced a tiebreaker. But Federer made three unforced errors in the tiebreaker to give Nadal a 6-1 lead, and the Spaniard eventually clinched the set on his last opportunity of five set points.

"Please win the point, that's all," Nadal recalled when asked what he was telling himself at 6-5 in the tiebreaker. "I was very, very nervous at that moment. Losing four set points in a row is tough, especially when you play the toughest in history."

Both players were asked if they bring out the best in each other.

"I don't know if it's true ... it's my assumption," Federer said. "I feel he plays really good against me. He's also got a winning record against me which maybe gives him extra confidence. I think he has a clear plan and he follows that one very well."

Nadal said that's not the case.

"I don't play my best tennis because it's Roger in front, I play my best tennis because I am ready to play my best tennis," Nadal said. "It's true I played a lot of good matches against him during my career ... but I believe that he played a few fantastic matches against me, too."

Clijsters was in the crowd, only hours after her title defense ended. And Ivan Lendl was at Rod Laver Arena for a second night, scouting opponents again as Murray's coach. So were former Australian greats Laver, Ken Rosewall and Pat Rafter.

Sharapova lost to second-ranked Kvitova in the Wimbledon final last year, her first major final since returning from an injury layoff following a shoulder operation in 2008. She has won three majors, but none since the 2008 Australian Open.

"In the third set, I felt she always had the advantage because I was always down on my serve," said Sharapova, who served five double-faults in the third set and 10 in the match. "I just told myself 'You just gotta go for it, don't let her finish off the points like she likes to.'"

Azarenka won the first semifinal after twice recovering from periods when a resurgent Clijsters seemed to have the upper hand, to secure victory in only her second appearance in a major semifinal.

"I felt like my hand is about 200 kilograms and my body is about 1,000 and everything is shaking, but that feeling when you finally win is such a relief. My God, I cannot believe it's over. I just want to cry," Azarenka said as she choked back tears, then buried her face in a towel.

Clijsters is popular in Australia, where she's widely known as "Aussie Kim" after dating Lleyton Hewitt years ago. She had most of the backing from the crowd on the national holiday in what is likely to be her last Australian Open.

Azarenka held her nerve despite the crowd and playing against a proven big-match player. Clijsters has won four majors and has defended a Grand Slam title ? winning the U.S. Open in 2009 and '10. To reach the semifinals, the Belgian saved four match points despite a sprained ankle to beat French Open champion Li Na in the fourth round and beat top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals.

"I guess before you all thought I was a mental case," Azarenka said in a courtside interview. "I was just young and emotional. I'm really glad the way I fight, that's the most thing I'm really proud of. I fight for every ball."

Wozniacki will vacate top spot in next week's rankings after her quarterfinal loss, leaving either No. 3 Azarenka and No. 4 Sharapova a chance to move to the top.

Steam community app available, access limited to beta participants for now

Android Central Android Central

If you're a PC or Mac gamer, chances are you've used Steam, Valve Software's leading digital distribution platform for games. Today sees the launch of the official Steam app for Android, a new application that gives you access to the Steam store and community features like Steam chat on-the-go. If you're big on Steam and the Steam community, this could definitely be worth a look.

It's worth clarifying that this isn't a fully-fledged Steam client for Android, so you won't be playing Portal 2 on your Galaxy Tab any time soon, unfortunately. All it lets you do is buy PC and Mac games and chat to your Steam friends.

While the app itself is freely available on the Android Market (see the link after the jump), you'll need to be part of the Steam Mobile beta group in order to use it, or you'll be rejected at the login screen. This is a little strange given that the app is openly advertised on SteamPowered.com with no mention that a beta invite is required. So keep an eye on this one, folks. All signs point to a possible public launch in the near future. If you are in the beta group, however, you'll find a handy Market link after the break.

Elizabeth Warren explains why America stopped investing in the ...

Last night during an appearance on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Massachusetts senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren explained why the federal government no longer invests in building up the middle-class. Here is Warren, starting at 2:40 in the interview, a video of which can be seen below the fold:
What's happened is that Washington now works for those who can hire an army of lobbyists and an army of lawyers.

You know, if you're in the drug business, and you are selling prescriptions to seniors, and you don't want to have to negotiate over the prices, Washington works beautifully for you.

If you want subsidies to drill for oil, Washington is working for you.

If you run a hedge fund and want to pay the lowest possible taxes, Washington is working for you.

In fact, there was recently a study, just in the last couple of weeks, there was a study in which it comes out that thirty of the largest companies in the United States are now spending more on lobbying than they pay in federal taxes.

Think about that. I mean that is the investment, and that's what they see as the future.

Politicians and pundits often say that Washington, D.C. is broken. However, the truth is that Washington works just fine for large corporations. These corporations invested heavily in influencing public policy, and it paid off handsomely for them. Everyone else just got left behind in the process.

Elizabeth Warren gets this, and it is yet another reason why we need her in the U.S. Senate.

Siemens quarterly net profit falls 17 percent (AP)

FRANKFURT, Germany ? Industrial equipment maker Siemens AG said Tuesday that net profit fell 17 percent to euro1.46 billion ($1.89 billion) in the final quarter of 2011 due to delays in major wind-power and rail projects, and as the uncertain global economic outlook hurt orders.

Chief executive officer Peter Loescher said the result showed that troubles on financial markets from Europe's debt crisis "have left their mark on the real economy" through weaker demand.

"The real economy cannot escape the effects of the volatility on the financial markets, public budgets are increasingly strained, anxiety about credit bottlenecks is dampening willingness to invest and global economic growth is levelling off," he said at a news conference webcast from the company's Munich headquarters.

The first quarter net profit figure exceeded average estimates of euro1.396 billion among analysts surveyed by FactSet. Revenue, which grew 3 percent to euro17.9 billion, was below expectations, while new orders slipped 5 percent to euro19.8 billion.

As a result, the company's shares fell 3.7 percent to euro75.49 in morning trading in Germany.

Siemens is one of the first big industrial companies to report earnings for the last three months of 2011, the fourth quarter for most companies but the first quarter of Siemens' fiscal year. Its fortunes are a clue to demand in the global economy, since the company is active far beyond its German home in the United States, Asia and the developing world.

The company sees a "mild" recession in the eurozone and a pickup in the second half of the year. Loescher said that the economic environment would remain difficult in the second quarter and then improve.

Europe is struggling with a crisis over too much government debt in some countries. The financial market turmoil has created fears of losses for banks that would lead to reduced credit availability for companies.

The company stayed with its outlook for income from continuing operations of euro6 billion. But Loescher added that the company would have to work hard to reach that goal and that "it's all about operational execution and the margin for error has narrowed."

He said an order backlog of euro100 billion would continue to support earnings.

CFO Joe Kaeser said the company foresaw a recovery in the second half of the year because of an expected improvement in investment among German mid-sized companies, as well as China, as businesses hope Europe might be getting a handle on its debt crisis.

Siemens makes heavy-duty industrial products such as wind turbines, power generation and transmission equipment, trains and medical diagnostic machines for hospitals. Such goods represent large investments for customers, who may decide to put them off in times of uncertainty about future demand.

The company said it took euro203 million in charges from a delay in permission to connect offshore windfarms to the power grid in Germany because of issues regarding the project's specifications. Loescher said the company was in "an intensive dialogue" with German government officials about the windfarms.

Kaeser said the charges from the delay to the North Sea project were the company's best estimate but might not be capped yet. He said there was "no guarantee this is the final version... we book what we see."

The company said higher research and investment costs and pricing pressures from stiff competition in its wind energy business also reduced profit. So did delays in delivering new high-speed trains to German rail operator Deutsche Bahn AG. That led to a charge of euro69 million.

The train delay was caused by a supplier of equipment needed to make sure the trains can run on both the German and French rail systems.

Natural supplement found to improve skin elasticity by 25 percent and skin hydration by 8 percent

(Jan. 25, 2012) HOBOKEN, NJ Human skin is the body's first line of defense and often mirrors the health, nutritional status and age of a person. Over time, skin shows signs of aging due to the gradual breakdown of collagen and elastin. However, skin can be rebuilt and made healthier no matter one's age. Natural supplement Pycnogenol (pic-noj-en-all), an antioxidant plant extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, was found to improve skin hydration and elasticity in women in a clinical trial published this month in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology.

The study was conducted at the Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine (IUF) in Dusseldorf, Germany and examined 20 healthy women, aged 55 68 years. Participants were given 75 mg of Pycnogenol per day, over a period of 12 weeks. Skin hydration, skin elasticity and skin fatigue were assessed by non-invasive biophysical methods at trial start and after six and 12 weeks. In addition, at the beginning and again after 12 weeks of Pycnogenol supplementation, each time, a biopsy was obtained to assess gene expression of HAS-1 and COL1A1 and COL1A2. The study found that:

  • Pycnogenol elevated COL1A1 by 29 percent and COL1A2 by 41 percent and increased hyaluronic acid production in skin by 44 percent
  • Pycnogenol enhanced skin elasticity by 25 percent, in addition to skin hydration by eight percent, and was especially noticeable in women who had dry skin from the start, with an increase of 21 percent
  • Pycnogenol decreased skin fatigue considerably
  • Pycnogenol reduced skin wrinkles by three percent and increased skin smoothness by six percent

"To date, Pycnogenol is the only natural supplement that stimulates hyaluronic acid production in human skin. And, we are encouraged by the molecular evidence confirmed in this study that shows nutritional supplementation with Pycnogenol benefits human skin," explains Dr. Jean Krutmann, the lead researcher from the Leibniz Research Institute in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Study results confirmed Pycnogenol improved skin at a physiological and molecular level. Pycnogenol increased hyaluronic acid in women by 44 percent after 12 weeks of supplementation. Hyaluronic acid binds large quantities of water in the skin and in other tissues, such as cartilage. An increased amount of hyaluronic acid explains the increased skin hydration, higher elasticity and overall smoother skin appearance found in women taking Pycnogenol.

"This exciting and technically advanced investigation with women representing actual consumer profiles greatly supports our efforts for targeting the skin beauty category for both dietary supplements and functional foods," says Victor Ferrari, CEO of Horphag Research, exclusive worldwide suppliers of Pycnogenol, who welcomes the publication.

According to Ferrari, beauty from within has been a driver in Horphag's business for the last several years, with Asian markets providing numerous Pycnogenol products in the skincare field. This study joins a sizable and largely expanding portfolio of already established skin research on Pycnogenol. It confirms previous indications that Pycnogenol improves human skin conditions, including promoting glowing skin and reducing the appearance of over-pigmentation and skin inflammation, resulting in a more even complexion.

Finding your childlike heart

A Christian Science perspective.

Countless and timeless images of children at play in joyful abandon span cultures and generations. We picture the child with fresh, exciting moments of curiosity, concentration, and discovery, finding the opportunity for satisfaction and solace or simply letting stimulation and energy capture his or her desires. Contrast these images with the drum of fear, worry, and anger; the sting of seriousness; the syndrome of chronic exhaustion; and the pressures of diminishing free time ? so blatant in the 24/7 working world.

The Scriptures record how the prophet Zechariah foresaw the ideal society of a restored Jerusalem, prospering with a city full of men and women with staff in hand, ?and the streets ... full of boys and girls playing? (Zechariah 8:4, 5), everyone content and happy.

Looking at our own times, we too often see a quest for advancement and prestige in society and commerce, a compulsion for ?greatness,? casting a shadow over the natural childlike expectation of good and delight in us. We wonder, Is it still possible to experience joy without foreboding, awareness without caution, and responsiveness without imposed strictures? Have the elements of freedom and play been squelched by the constraints and labors of survival and the jealousy of material purpose?

The ancient pleas of the disciples to their Master as to ?who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?? reveal how the patterns of human concern are ever the same. Jesus? response provides fundamental teaching on this matter. Inviting those around him to consider the little child in their midst, he said: ?Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven? (see Matthew 18:1-4). Jesus pronounced the greatness of childlikeness.

?Except ye be converted? echoes a challenge to mortal efforts of self-will, pride, jealousy, and boasted intellect. Christian Science teaches plainly that conversion is the changing of one?s standpoint from a material to a spiritual basis of trust and reasoning. This conversion must accept the sons and daughters of God as His spiritual image and likeness only, under the jurisdiction of God?s government and care, designed by Him to include all the elements of fresh expectation, satisfying purpose, and natural fulfillment. A savor of God?s heavenly kingdom in us!

Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer of Christian Science, advocated the protection of childhood purpose with its inventiveness, innocence, and hopefulness. The tenor of her teachings promotes the yielding and trust of childlikeness as foundational for everyone to find and experience their heritage of satisfaction and dominion. Echoing Jesus? promise of a better life, she wrote in her companion textbook to the Bible, ?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures?: ?Willingness to become as a little child and to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea? (pp. 323-324). Being childlike and receptive will move us not toward the elementary or immature idea but to the ?advanced idea,? a more divinely influenced experience with a basis for success, contentment, and well-being.

Deputy head of Libya's NTC quits after protests (Reuters)

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) ? The deputy head of Libya's ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) said on Sunday he was resigning after a series of protests against the new government which the country's leader warned could drag Libya into a "bottomless pit."

Late on Saturday, a crowd demanding the government's resignation smashed windows and forced their way into the NTC's local headquarters in Benghazi, in the most serious show of anger at the new authorities since Muammar Gaddafi was ousted.

The NTC has the support of the Western powers who helped force out Gaddafi in a nine-month conflict, but it is unelected, has been slow to restore basic public services, and some Libyans say too many of its members are tarnished by ties to Gaddafi.

Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, vice-president of the NTC and one of the council's highest-profile members, was the target of some of the protesters' criticism. He said he was quitting to try to limit the damage to the council.

"My resignation is for the benefit of the nation and is required at this stage," Ghoga told Al Jazeera television.

He said the national consensus that helped the country rise up and end Gaddafi's 42-year rule had not lasted into peace-time, giving way instead to what he called an atmosphere of "hatred."

"I do not want this atmosphere to continue and negatively affect the National Transitional Council and its performance," said Ghoga, who also acted as the NTC's spokesman.

Ghoga is one of the most senior of Libya's new rulers to have left office since Gaddafi's overthrow in August. His departure will revive doubts about the NTC's ability to form a cohesive and effective government.

He was jostled by an angry crowd of students when he visited a university in Benghazi on Thursday. He had to be pulled away to safety.

"BOTTOMLESS PIT"

NTC chief Mustafa Abdel Jalil, speaking in Benghazi earlier on Sunday, appealed to the protesters to be more patient.

"We are going through a political movement that can take the country to a bottomless pit," he said. "There is something behind these protests that is not for the good of the country."

"The people have not given the government enough time and the government does not have enough money. Maybe there are delays, but the government has only been working for two months. Give them a chance, at least two months."

In a glimpse of the lack of coordination which Western diplomats say pervades the workings of the NTC, Abdel Jalil was asked if Ghoga would be stepping down and said he would not.

The protests in Benghazi, in eastern Libya, are particularly troubling for the NTC because the city was the birthplace of the revolt against Gaddafi's 42-year rule. It was the site of the NTC's headquarters during the revolt.

Abdel Jalil said he met with religious leaders and protesters to discuss their grievances.

He said he had accepted the resignation of the head of the Benghazi local council, Saleh El-Ghazal. Like most Libyan officials, the head of the council was appointed but Abdel Jalil said his successor would be chosen through an election.

Why bats, rats and cats store different amounts of fat

Friday, January 20, 2012

Animals differ in the amount of fat they carry around depending on their species, status and sex. However, the causes of much of this variation have been a mystery. The Bristol study shows that many differences can be understood by considering the strategies animals employ to avoid two causes of death: starvation and being killed by predators.

These causes of death often exert opposite pressures on animals, for example, storing lots of fat helps animals survive periods without food but also slows their running and so makes getting caught by a predator more likely. Animals can be stronger to compensate, but the energetic costs of extra muscle mean that the animal would starve quicker during a food shortage.

Led by Dr Andrew Higginson of Bristol's School of Biological Sciences, the researchers used mathematical models to explore how much muscle and fat animals should have in their body to give themselves the best chance of survival. They showed that an important consideration was how much carrying fat increases the energetic costs of movement. The models revealed that the size of this cost influenced whether larger animals should have more fat than smaller animals, or vice versa.

Dr Higginson said: "Our results explain differences between different families of mammal. For example, larger bats carry proportionally less fat than small bats but larger carnivores carry more fat than small carnivores. Among rodents, it's the medium-sized species that carry around the most fat! These differences agree with the models predictions if you consider the costs of carrying fat for these three groups. Bats fly and so have high costs of carrying extra weight, whilst carnivores spend much of their time resting and so will use less energy than busy scurrying rodents."

The work, published in The American Naturalist, also shows that much of the variation between animals in their amounts of fat and muscle can be explained by differences between the sexes, how much animals have to fight to get food, and the climate in which they live.

The researchers plan to put the theory to the test by looking in more detail at the amounts of fat stored by different animals. If their theory is correct, much of the mystery in how species and sexes differ in their amount of fat will have been solved.
